Caring for Healthy Smiles at Millennium Williams School – Mathare

At Millennium School in Mathare, we see every day that a child’s future is shaped by more than education alone. For children to learn well, grow in confidence, and dream beyond their circumstances, their health and well-being must also be cared for.

That is why we were so encouraged to welcome dental cleaning classes supported by Colgate for the children and young people at the school. Through these sessions, students learned the importance of oral hygiene and received practical guidance on how to care for their teeth.

For many children living in vulnerable communities, access to health education is limited. Something as simple as learning how to properly clean and protect their teeth can make a real difference — not only for their physical health, but also for their dignity, confidence, and daily comfort.

This matters deeply. A 2024 study on children living in Nairobi’s urban slums found that 40% had dental caries, more than 90% showed signs of gum disease, and 41% had dental fluorosis. These numbers remind us that oral health is not a small issue — it is part of a child’s dignity, confidence, and ability to thrive.

For many children in vulnerable communities, access to health education is limited. That is why moments like these are so important. They help build healthy habits, raise awareness, and give children knowledge they can carry into the future.

It was moving to see the children engaged, curious, and smiling as they took part in the lessons. These moments remind us that small acts of care can have a lasting impact. When a child feels seen, valued, and supported, hope begins to grow.

At Jenga Africa, we believe in caring for the whole child. Alongside quality education, we remain committed to supporting the health and well-being of the children in Mathare so they can thrive in every area of life.
